Straight Up Aviation & Columbus-Lowndes County Airport
A new corporate-type hangar at Columbus-Lowndes County Airport (KUBS) is getting its final touches, reaching a major milestone to enhance the airport’s future growth. The project was made possible through a $600,000 Multi-Modal grant awarded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) as well as federal BIL funding. The insulated 9,600 square-foot building’s key features include an 18′ x 80′ single-swing hydraulic door, efficient LED lighting, ceiling fans, restroom and epoxy floor. There are future plans to add heating and air.
Airport Manager Dan Duston says, “The state’s investment in the project is deeply appreciated. When I saw a similar hangar constructed at Louisville-Winston County Airport, I immediately thought, ‘This is exactly what Columbus-Lowndes County Airport needs to propel itself forward and offer a hangar that will attract new aviation related companies.’”
In a display of how the MAA community strengthens one another, Duston notes Louisville Airport Director and fellow MAA member Mike Forster was a supportive resource throughout the project.
“Mike came and talked to our board about how their hangar had improved business at Louisville,” he remarks. “And I knew I could pick up the phone and call him any time I had questions.”
Runway Project
The Columbus-Lowndes County Airport also recently completed a much-needed rehabilitation of the runway, with the final coat of paint applied earlier this spring. The airport appreciates MDOT’s and the Federal Aviation Administration’s contributions toward the project. It has been receiving compliments ever since.
States Duston, “I’ll do everything possible to prolong the life of the new surface and keep it safe and presentable through routine cleaning.”
