Join In, Stand Out!

By Rebecca Parker, Associate Professor of Practice
Department of Commercial Aviation, Delta State University

The Delta State University motto “Join In. Stand Out.” describes the year 2023 for the Magnolia Chapter, Women in Aviation (WAI)! The chapter has gone beyond expectations of WAI’s mission: “Promoting and encouraging women in all aspects of aviation, while also inspiring the next generation through community involvement.”

Magnolia Chapter Members have hosted STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events through the Girl Scouts, Bolivar County Public Library Summer Program, Delta State University Tech Savvy and Girls in Aviation Day. During these events, the next generation of professionals is inspired through hands-on activities, airport tours and fun approaches to learning.

In 2023, the Magnolia Chapter, WAI had its first Toy Drive. More than 200 new toys were donated from students in the Department of Commercial Aviation. These toys were gifted to foster children in Bolivar County for Christmas. Another holiday event was sending handwritten cards to the Walter B. Crook Nursing Home in Ruleville, MS.

Finally, members love to get involved with networking and fundraising opportunities through the annual Aviation Career Fair. More than 35 companies were vendors, sponsors or both – raising $6,900! These donations were used toward the Career Fair and toward Delta State students. A big thank you to the sponsors, including the Mississippi Airports Association. This year, we can help finance seven students’ attendance at the 2024 Women in Aviation Conference March 21-23 in Orlando, FL.

Anyone can join the Magnolia Chapter, WAI or Women in Aviation International. Children 18 and younger can join Women in Aviation International for free! Parents, watch for upcoming information on the next Girls in Aviation Day on September 21, 2024. Follow us on Facebook #MagnoliaChapterWAI.
